Since Apple II systems usually boot starting at the highest numbered slot this can be confusing; in the previous examples, with a CFFA in slot 7 only, the Apple would attempt to boot from the image specified as -hard1, but if a CFFA card is added to slot 5 then the Apple would attempt to boot from the image in -hard3. Potentially more confusing, SCSI cards can offer multiple -hard options corresponding to different device IDs in the chain, lowest ID first, but SCSI devices attempt to boot from the highest ID. So with a SCSI card in slot 7 with 2 hard drives offering -hard1 and -hard2, the Apple will attempt to boot from the image in -hard2.
