NetBSD/x68k installation

You will need:

  • MAME 0.290 or later
  • NetBSD/x68k installation floppy disk images - sysinst1.fs and sysinst2.fs (download)
  • NetBSD/x68k CD ISO (download)

NetBSD/x68k 9.5 is being used for this example, NetBSD/x68k 11.0 is known to not work currently. You may use older versions if you wish.

Step 1: Convert the floppy images to a usable format

All you have to do is rename the installation floppy images to sysinst1.2hc and sysinst2.2hc. If you are using an older installation set, the second floppy image may be smaller than expected. In this case, you will need to pad the file to be 1,200kB in size (1,228,800 bytes). On Linux, either objcopy or dd can do this.

Step 2: Boot into the installer

Run MAME with the first installation floppy image mounted in Drive 0, and the NetBSD ISO mounted. For NetBSD 9.0 or later, you will also need to enable the Neptune-X NIC to avoid an MMU fault when it tries to use it. The NIC does not need to be set up if you are not using it.

When prompted, mount the second installation floppy image in Drive 0, and wait for the installer to start.
